Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi and Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan have been friends for years, even briefly bandmates when Gillan took over lead singer duties in Black Sabbath in the mid-‘80s. Now, they’ve teamed up to release WhoCares, a collection of rarities from both of their respective back catalogs.

Glenn Hughes On A Deep Purple Mk III Reunion: “No One At ‘Castle Blackmore’ Opened The Door”

Glenn Hughes tells CBS Local that “Jon, David and I were trying to get it together.” The roadblock was the band’s famously mercurial guitarist: “We couldn’t get ahold of him. We sent carrier pigeons, and the Pony Express. But nobody at ‘Castle Blackmore’ answered the door. It wasn’t meant to be.”

Jon Lord’s “Concerto For Group And Orchestra” Due September 25

Deep Purple’s 1969 live release Concerto For Group And Orchestra is one of the earliest examples of rock music being played by a full orchestra. Keyboardist Jon Lord composed the music for that album, and he revisited it shortly before his passing on July 16.

Deep Purple’s Jon Lord Dead at 71

Deep Purple keyboardist and co-founder Jon Lord died today (July 16) in London after suffering a fatal pulmonary embolism and a lengthy battle with pancreatic cancer.
