J. Geils’ recent lawsuit claims he owns the rights to the name “J. Geils Band” and the band is violating his copyright by touring without him. Singer Peter Wolf says the legal issues are just one way a band like theirs faces trouble over time. It’s hard to avoid when the same group of guys play together for almost five decades.
“Mr. Geils has this trademark and never transferred it to anybody,” Geils’ attorney Chuck Grimes told the Boston Globe. “These guys performed in Mr. Geils’s band, but that doesn’t give them the right to grab the name.”
So why no Geils? Legal drama.
