In 2011, Canada lost a popular political leader to cancer. His name was Jack Layton and he was the opposition leader in Canada’s House of Parliament in Ottawa Ontario. He did some amazing things in his life (like fighting for the homeless and most recently turning the fortunes of the New Democratic Party from a unpopular party which traditionally always finished poorly in past elections, into the opposition party in impressive fashion despite battling cancer.

Canadians admired him for his passion for politics, his involvment in the Toronto community (where he was originally from) and in general for life (based on what I read about him)
I remember attending his visitation in Toronto at the same place where my dad used to work for many years as a municipal engineer for the city (working and raising two kids by himself with one arm and leg as a result of a stroke). I remember Layton’s funeral and wathcing some of it. It was moving..

A couple days before his death he wrote a letter to Canadians which I found truly inspiring and highly motivational. It has continued to help me in pursuing my Eric’s MIrror and RainbowRay dreams as well as falling in love with my beloved Fiona in Memphis.

Here is an excerpt from that letter that was published in Canadian newspapers adn online shortly after his death. I find it still highly inspirational and appropriate as we approach “Out with the Old, In with the New” (also my wedding proposal theme for Fiona). I hope you like it!

    Dated: August 20 2011

“…My friends, love is better then anger. Hope is better then fear. Optimism is better then despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic and we’ll change the world.”

    All the best,
    Jack Layton
    (New Democratic Party Leader)
