Chrissie Hynde Dismisses Madonna, Kardashians, Music Industry Sexism

Hynde doesn't have the time of day for any of those things.

The paperback edition of Chrissie Hynde’s memoir Reckless: My Life as a Pretender came out August 9. To promote the book, The Pretenders vocalist sat down for a candid interview with People.

In the article, the interviewer tells Hynde that Madonna once praised her as a major musical influence. Seemingly unimpressed, Hynde responds, “She says that! She probably thinks it sounds cool.” Hynde also declares that although she could pick a Kardashian out of a lineup, she doesn’t know “beyond that, what their thing is.”

The Pretenders frontwoman also insists that she never faced sexism in the music industry.

“No, never,” she says. “Not in music. Not at all. The only thing that ever held me back was myself, because I was shy; I was embarrassed to play in front of guys; I didn’t think I was very good.”

Last year, Hynde courted controversy with remarks about how to prevent rape. She responded to the criticism by announcing, “If you don’t want my opinion, don’t ask me for it.”
