SANTA CLARITA (CBSLA.com) — The deadly Sand Fire was declared 100 percent contained Wednesday morning.
The fire burned 41,432 acres since it broke out July 22 near Sand Canyon Road along the northbound Antelope Valley (14) Freeway. About 250 firefighters remained on the scene Wednesday, working to mop up and put out hot spots, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
The blaze destroyed 18 homes and killed a man, and prompted the evacuation of an estimated 20,000 people, all of whom have since returned home. The last evacuation orders were lifted on Friday.
