Labor Day Events Happening Around Los Angeles & Orange County

Labor Day weekend usually marks the unofficial end of summer with one last long weekend to enjoy the season with a little relaxation from work and before getting the kids back to school.

As many of us prepare to fire up the grill, plan a picnic or soak up some sun at the beach, there are always plenty of events and activities to take in over the weekend as well.

Below, we highlighted a few events happening around the Los Angeles and Orange County areas.

Los Angeles Labor Day Events:

L.A. County Fair

Fill your day with an array of delicious fair food, carnival games and rides at the annual L.A. County Fair, celebrating its 92nd year! The month-long fair kicks off Labor Day weekend and is the perfect place to let loose your inner child over this long weekend.

  • When: Aug. 29-Sept. 28
  • Where: The Fairplex in Pomona, 1101 W. McKinley Ave, Pomona, CA 91768, off the 10 Freeway, exit Fairplex Drive or White Ave.

The Taste

For the more sophisticated pallet, head out the L.A. Times/Food & Wine’s annual event The Taste. Sample gourmet foods from celebrity chefs and fine wine around during the fest’s featured culinary events on the Paramount Pictures Studio lot. Note: must be 21 to attend.

Made In America Festival

Jay-Z is bringing his popular New York fest to the west coast for the first time with two days of music rocking downtown’s Grand Park. With various artists set to perform including Kanye West, The National, Kings of Leon, Pharrell Williams, Spoon, Chromeo, J. Cole and many more, music lovers of all kinds can enjoy this eclectic fest.

Long Beach Greek Festival

Be Greek for a day with plenty of authentic foods, music and dancing at the fest for all ages!

  • When: Labor Day Weekend, Sat-Mon, noon – 9 pm
  • Where: Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 5761 E. Colorado St, Long Beach 90814

Fiesta Hermosa

The free three-day arts and crafts fest will have over 200 vendors, food, music and a kiddie carnival.

Art Deco Festival on the Queen Mary

Celebrating its 10th year, the Art Deco Fest on the Queen Mary pays homage to this decadent era with “a long weekend of total immersion in the 1930s.” There are plenty of activities from art tours, vintage shopping and even some prohibition-era tastings.

City of Los Angeles Birthday Celebration

This free street fest in Downtown Los Angeles will feature the “Los Pobladores – Walk to Los Angeles” to re-enact the founding of El Pueblo de Los Angeles at the current Olvera Street. At the end of the walk, participants can enjoy music, food and vendor booths.

  • When: Saturday, Aug. 30; 6:00 am – 9:30 am, Post walk celebration on Olvera Street 9 am – 1 pm
  • Where: El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historic Site, 125 Paseo de la Plaza, Los Angeles, 90012 at Olvera Street.

Cinecon Classic Film Fest

Celebrate the films rarely seen on screen at the five-day Cinecon Film Fest in Hollywood. The site describes the fest as being “dedicated to showcasing unusual films that are rarely given public screenings.” Over 30 silent films will be showcased along with celebrity panels, and even movie memorabilia available for purchase.

  • When: Aug. 28-Sept. 1
  • Where: The Egyptian Theatre, 6712 Hollywood Blvd, LA 90028; Banquet and film book and Memorabilia Shows are at the Loews Hollywood (formerly Hollywood Renaissance) Hotel.

Orange County Labor Day Events:

Great Labor Day Cruise

This three-day event features a huge display of classic cars at the OC Fairgrounds, live entertainment, a kid’s play area, model car contest, games and more. Plus, proceeds from the event go towards a good cause to the Wounded Warrior Project.

  • Where: Orange County Fairgrounds, Costa Mesa

The Sawdust Festival

Happening now, the Laguna Beach Sawdust Festival wraps up almost a month-long event this Labor Day weekend. Featuring locally made art from paintings, drawings, sculptures, photography, jewelry and more, this event draws in over 200,000 visitors each year. There’s also plenty of demonstrations from the crafters themselves, including glass-blowing, and workshops for all ages.

Orange International Street Fair

This annual street fair closes off roads in Old Town OC for a three day fest filled with 42 food and drink vendors, handmade arts and crafts, eight live music stages featuring local artists, a whole street dedicated to kids activities and games and much more.

Civil War Days

Watch historical reenactments of two battles at Central Park, get a lesson in weapons demonstrations, including cannon fire twice a day, plus hear a reading of the Gettysburg Address and listen to the U.S. Marine Band.
