Sitting in with The K-EARTH 101 Morning Show today was the one and only Rick Springfield, who stopped by to talk about his upcoming charity concert. Rick will be performing a special concert Wednesday night (Aug. 20) at the House of Blues on Sunset in benefit of his longtime guitar tech, Ruben Velasco.
Rick is throwing this all-star ‘Rock For Ruben’ show with 100 percent of the proceeds going towards helping his friend, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. It’s a subject very near and dear to Rick’s heart, who has seen many of his loved ones go through the same thing.
“Ruben’s 38 and a couple weeks ago was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. I don’t know anybody at this point whose life hasn’t been touched by [cancer],” Rick told Gary and Lisa. “My dad died from cancer, I have a bunch of friends who died…and Ruben, we just want to support him every way we can. He’s a great guy.”
There will also be plenty of special guests performing at the show with Rick including guitarist John5 (Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson), and since Kiss is Ruben’s favorite band, there will be a special Kiss set lead by the band’s lead guitarist for 12 years, Bruce Kulick.
“Kiss is Ruben’s favorite band, so I’m going to actually be singing a Kiss song,” Rick laughed. “It’s Ruben’s favorite song ‘Rocket Ride’… and we’re doing ‘Good Times Roll’…and John5 is going to play on ‘You Really Got Me’ and we’re doing a bunch of different things.”
Kenny Aronoff, James Lomenzo, Elliot Easton from the Cars, Gilby Clarke of Guns ‘N’ Roses and more surprise guests are scheduled to stop by.
In addition to the show, there’s a VIP auction that fans can bid on one-of-a-kind items like signed guitars from Kiss members, Sammy Hagar, Weezer and more artists, a private dinner with Rick himself, his signed Chuck Taylor shoes and much more. Check out all the auction items by clicking here.
