Motown legend Smokey Robinson is revamping some of his greatest hits, and he’s enlisted some of his famous friends to help. For his upcoming duets album, Smokey & Friends, the soul legend called upon classic and contemporary artists like Elton John, James Taylor and John Legend to lend their voices to his classic tracks.

In his latest teaser track from the album, Robinson duets with Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and former Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger on the 1962 top ten hit “You Really Got A Hold On Me” by his R&B group Smokey Robinson & The Miracles.

“I worked with Steven Tyler and Nicole Scherzinger to create this new version of “You Really Got A Hold On Me” for my upcoming duets album, “Smokey & Friends,” out August 19th. And now I’m presenting it to all of my fans first,” Smokey writes on his website.

The update rendition has a bluesier-rock feel with twangy electric guitar and big drum hits than the original R&B ballad, but still keeps that same soulful groove throughout. Tyler’s raspy vocals perfectly complement Robinson’s tender voice, while Scherzinger provides gorgeous vocal highlights on the chorus.

Smokey & Friends is scheduled for release on Aug. 19th and has a handful of upcoming tour dates in support of the album. Will any of Smokey’s ‘friends’ make an appearance at his upcoming concert at LA’s Greek Theatre on Aug. 16th? We’ll just have to wait and find out!
