Tonight is the kick off of the brand new season of So You Think You Can Dance, and joining us all the way from the Emerald Isle is the gorgeous host of the show, Cat Deely.
Cat called in from Ireland (where sadly she has not had any Kimye honeymoon sightings yet) to talk about the season premiere of SYTYCD that features a guest appearance from Justin Bieber. She tells us that the season premiere adds a brand new element that’s never been done on the show before.
“Basically what we’re doing is we’re looking for some of the best dance crews in America,” she explained on the tonight’s premiere. “So what we’ve done is we got two crews every audition show that are going to battle each other and it’s up to our audience to vote on Twitter and decide who is the best dance crew.”
She adds that the dance crew with the most Twitter votes over the series of audition shows will win a spot to perform on the show’s season finale.
So how does Justin Bieber fit in to all of this? The show brought on Justin and his choreographer Nick DeMoura to introduce the two dance crews before the battles on each of the four audition episodes.
“It’s like the bad boy of pop introducing the dance crews of America. It’s kind of cool,” she said.
Though she didn’t personally interact with Justin on the set, Cat says she didn’t hear any stories of the controversial pop star acting out on set.
“I heard that he was a perfect gentleman, very well behaved,” she said.
The dance crew battles is just one of the new additions to the show this season, but one thing that remains constant is Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy back as judges of the contestants. The show will also bring on a few guest judges, including Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Billy Porter and Misty Copeland, Wayne Brady, Jenna Elfman and Fabrice Calmels and Christina Applegate throughout the season.
“They all just mix up the judging a little bit and change up the dynamic, which makes it interesting again for everybody watching at home,” she said.
The brand new season of SYTYCD kicks off tonight in a special two-hour premiere at 8pm on FOX. Listen to our complete interview with Cat Deely in the clip below.
