MOVIES: SPIKE LEE’S SCHOOL DAZE
Spike Lee tackles good hair, complexion, social class and sexism with his revolutionary, 1988 dark comedy film, School Daze. Lee explores racial tensions among students at an African American university as the film pits the school’s light skinned students against the independent students of darker complexion. In the film, the “wannabes” and “jigaboos” challenge each other’s racial identity resulting in a divided student body. Through a disturbing and unforgettable song-and-dance sequence, the feelings of animosity among the students is expressed with a musical number titled “Straight and Nappy” and continuously delivers humorous glimpses into racial politics and tensions among the students. Spike Lee, Lawrence Fishburne, Brandford Marsalis and Tisha Campbell star in this illuminating comedy. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art Presents Spike Lee’s School Daze on May 16th at Lueders Park.
