Ah, the Sony Walkman. Once the king of all portable music consumption, now just an outdated, mocked relic of the simpler days of the ’80s. Now in the days of the iPhone, iPad, Spotify and MP3s, what happens when you give kids today a Sony Walkman to play with?
In the latest webisode of the “Kids React” series dreamed up by the Fine Bros. comedy troupe, a group of kids ranging from age 6-13 are given the task of operating a Walkman for the first time in their young lives.
None of the kids have ever seen, let alone heard of, the clunky ’80s device before, and what plays out on camera is nothing short of hilarity. Each of the kids are handed the heavy brick and “try to figure out how a Walkman works and what they think of how it competes against the technology of today,” according to the video description.
As the kids fumble around with the ancient technology, which celebrates if 35th anniversary this year, they are genuinely befuddled (that’s a word, right?) on what this supposed “portable music player” even does. It gets even better when they’re handed a cassette tape to put inside, and are outraged when they learn you must use headphones to even listen to the music! The horror.
Since the videos posting on April 13th, it’s rocketed to over 3.5 million views. Watch below to see why, but be warned, you may come away feeling ancient after watching.
