Billy Joel proved that he isn’t just some ‘big shot’ musician, but in all reality, the piano man is sincerely appreciative of his fans and all around cool dude.
The singer made a surprise visit to an elementary school in Long Island that was giving a Billy Joel tribute performance on Wednesday. Joel road up on his motorcycle about five minutes before showtime at Glen Cove’s Deasy Elementary School without notice and took a seat in the auditorium.
“We invited Billy Joel on a lark, but we didn’t expect him to come. It was totally thrilling,” Nomi Rosen, Deasy’s principal, told Newsday. “We were all beside ourselves.”
The school took a photo of Joel sitting and applauding the “River of Dreams” performance made up of kindergarten, first and second graders and provided it to Newsday, who shared it on Twitter.
“I asked him if he wanted to sit in front, but he said he would rather stay in the back so he wouldn’t make the kids nervous,” Rosen added.
Reports also say that Joel lives about 10 minutes away from the school. How cool is that?
