It’s been nearly a year since the deadly bombing at the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013, and that tragic day is still fresh in America’s memory. In a special report tonight, CNN anchor Anderson Cooper takes viewers through the tough road to recovery in one survivor’s inspiring story over the past year.

Anderson joined us on the phone this morning to talk about his new documentary “CNN Special Report: The Survivor Diaries” tonight at 10pm on CNN. The special follows the journey of professional dancer Adrianne Haslet-Davis, a Boston Marathon bombing survivor who had her lower left leg amputated, on her road to dance again.

“She is determined to dance again, so we literally follow her over the course of a year as she tries to dance again,” explained Anderson. “There’s been huge advances in prosthetics in the last couple years really because of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but legs for dancing are still really tough.”

Anderson adds that in the documentary tonight, viewers will actually see Adrianne develop a “special kind of foot” that helps her get closer to her dream of being able to dance again. The cameras follow her along as she overcomes the struggle of her new reality as an amputee and works to dance again, promising Anderson a dance lesson. So does he dance with her in the special?

“I do, which is embarrassing because I’m a terrible, terrible dancer,” he joked.

As a longtime war reporter, Anderson has been face to face with dangerous scenarios himself. What goes through his mind when putting himself in that kind of danger?

“I’ve been doing war reporting since I first started. When I got out of college and couldn’t get an entry level job, I made a fake press pass…so I started going to wars by myself,” he explained. “I’ve been very, very lucky. I’ve been hit a couple times and punched around a bit, but I’ve never been shot.”

He adds, “you never know how you’re going to respond, and I think that’s the thing that’s so kind of amazing about Adrianne is that any of our lives can change in a blink of an eye, and we’d like to think we would be as strong as she is.”
