Another year, another big season coming up for the Dodgers! Los Angeles is buzzing with Dodger fever as the boys in blue take on the San Francisco Giants in the home opener today at 1pm!
Joining us on the phone this morning was Dodger legend Tommy Lasorda, who gave us an outlook on the team’s 2014 season. He shared his excitement for today’s opening day at Dodger Stadium.
“It’s gonna be a great one…I’ve made so many of them, but they’re always so exciting,” he said. “No matter where you are, what you’re doing, as long as you’ll be at opening day as a player, manager, coach or something, it’s exciting.”
Tommy also gave his thoughts on the Dodgers’ chances of making it to the World Series this year, agreeing with ESPN’s prediction that the team will make it all the way, saying “rightly so, we have an outstanding ball club.”
One of the big controversies going in to the 2014 season is whether breakout player Yasiel Puig’s arrest late last year will have any affect on his game this season.
“Puig is going to be an outstanding player for the Dodgers,” said Tommy. “A guy can make mistakes, but the one thing you don’t want to ever do is take the enthusiasm away and excitement away from him.”
When controversies like that happen with the players outside of the ball game, we asked Tommy if he sits down with them to give them advice.
“Absolutely, that’s one of the things I enjoy doing and they let me do that because they know the players will listen to me,” he said.
So what does Tommy say is the key for the Dodgers to beat the Giants in today’s game?
“The Giants are trying to push up as many good players as they can to be able to compete with us,” he said. “You don’t play the game with paper, you play it on the ball field. Just because we have all these guys who are making tons of money that doesn’t mean with certainty we’ll win. We have to go out and work hard…we got to go out and believe we’re going to finish number one.”
Wise words from a wise man.
