Next week, Elton John will release a deluxe anniversary reissue of his classic 1973 album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, which will include a number of newer artists covering songs from the album (see the full track list here). Punk pop band Fall Out Boy’s “Saturday Night’s All Right For Fighting” has already been posted for streaming (hear it here), and now, R&B singer Miguel’s take on “Bennie and the Jets” is starting to make the internet rounds.
Miguel choose to stay true to the original arrangement while adding a few modern flourishes of his very own, including a buzzing synthesizer bass line, a few digital piano stutters and his own signature vocal styling.
The version also comes complete with a rap from Wale, who makes a wry reference to the original lyrics, rapping about how she’s “in a mohair suit signing autographs.” Miguel also shout outs this mohair suit, wondering, “Where do you get a mohair suit anyway?” Logical question, really.
The box set also features covers by Ed Sheeran, Hunter Hayes, the Band Perry, John Grant, Emeli Sande and Zac Brown Band.
