With K-EARTH 101’s Bugstock 2014 just two weeks away, we’re celebrating all things Volkswagen by taking a look at some of the most famous VWs featured in movies over the years!

And don’t forget to join us for the largest VW car display in Southern California at Bugstock on March 29th at the OC Market Place! Click here for details.

Herbie: The Love Bug (1969)

Perhaps the most famous Volkswagen Beetle in history, Disney’s Herbie series kicked off America’s love affair with the VW Beetle. In the first 1969 film The Love Bug, we’re introduced to Herbie, a Beetle who has a mind of its own, can drive itself and becomes a serious race car competitor. Herbie is distinguished with that iconic red, white and blue racing stripe down the middle with the number 53 on the hood and sides.

The Herbie series has had a lasting legacy with numerous films and even a TV series made throughout the years, the most recent being the 2005 reboot Herbie: Fully Loaded with Lindsay Lohan.

Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

Other than little Olive herself, the broken-down old VW bus was the breakout star of this darling indie flick. To help chase Olive’s dreams of becoming a beauty queen in the Little Miss Sunshine pageant, her whole family saddles up for a cross-country road trip in their yellow VW bus that causes a mess of problems along the way. According to IMDB, five identical Volkswagen Type 2s were used during the filming.

The Shining (1980)

During the opening sequence of Stanley Kubric’s horror masterpiece based on the Stephen King novel, the camera follows along a tiny VW Beetle winding through the mountains on narrow roadways on its way to the isolated Overlook Hotel. The title scene was filmed at Glacier National Park, and according to Artofthetitle.com Kubric said the memorable scene was created to “establish an ominous mood during Jack’s first drive up to the hotel — the vast isolation and eerie splendour of high mountains, and the narrow, winding roads which would become impassable after heavy snow.”

Pretty In Pink (1986)

In the 1986 John Hughes-written rom-com, Molly Ringwald’s character Andie drove a pink 1958 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe. See the photo here!

Magnum P.I. (1980s)

On the hit ’80 TV series Magnum P.I. starring Tom Selleck, helicopter pilot TC (played by Roger E. Mosley) drove a multi-colored 1983 Volkswagen Caravelle T3 Type 25 with the words “Island Hoppers” on the side when he wasn’t flying the chopper around the island. See a photo here!
