This Sunday night is Hollywood’s biggest party as the most notable names in movies all gather for the 86th Annual Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre.
Local entertainment reporters Sam Rubin and Jessica Holmes will be live on the red carpet for their Oscars pre-show special on KTLA 5 from 3-4:30pm, and he says he already has his tux ready to go for the big night. Sam joined us on the K-EARTH 101 Morning Show to talk about the special, saying that working the red carpet at the Oscars has a much different energy than all the other award shows.
“I think we love to see stars at their most candid and it’s really this vulnerable thing,” he said, noting that of all the award shows, the Oscars are “bigger, it’s the top tier.”
Sam will no doubt have dozens of run ins with A-list celebs walking the red carpet, one of whom might be an actor he recently had an embarrassing encounter with on live TV. Earlier this month, Sam’s interview with actor Samuel L. Jackson went viral after his mistook him for Laurence Fishburne during the interview and the actor called him out on the mistake.
“There will in theory be a Sam and Samuel L. reunion. He is an Oscar presenter, so we may well meet each other once again on the red carpet,” he said. “If we talk on the red carpet, and at some point I might say, ‘hey, you had that interesting conversation with that guy,’ my guess is that he won’t realize that was me.”
Sam told us what really happened during that now-infamous interview, saying that the mix-up really just boiled down to miscommunication between the two.
“It was one of these kind of cacophonies of confusion because he was in the ‘Captain America’ [Super Bowl] ad, and the minute I said it and the minute he reacted…I was like, ‘oh no he thinks I’m talking about [Laurence Fishburne],’ ” he explained, adding that he just let him go with his on air rant because “I wasn’t sure of what I knew and didn’t know.”
We also asked Sam what his Oscars predictions are for the top three categories of the night; Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Picture. For Best Actress, Sam is split between Sandra Bullock and Amy Adams, but is leaning towards Cate Blanchet to take the gold. For Best Actor, Sam says he’s going for Matthew McConaughey, but says Leonardo DiCaprio could upset him and win. Lastly, for Best Picture Sam says that the big award could go to either 12 Years A Slave or Gravity.
One thing is for sure, we’ll all be watching to see whether Sam has another run in with Samuel L. Jackson on the red carpet this Sunday at 3pm on KTLA 5!
