Five Songs For Bob Costas’ Red Eyes
If you’ve been tuning in to any of the Sochi Winter Olympics coverage on NBC this past week, you’ve probably noticed the glaring, red eye infection sports reporter Bob Costas has been enduring since the games began (if not, see a photo here. you’ve been warned).
After the infection in his left eye spread to his right eye, Costas announced Tuesday that he will be sitting out for a day to nurse the infection, and tagging in Today host Matt Lauer to take over NBC’s primetime coverage.
“Reluctantly, I was trying to throw a complete game here, but I think we’re going to have to go to the bullpen, and I don’t know if you’re aware of this or not, but you’re Mariano Rivera, at least tonight,” Costas told Lauer by phone live on TODAY Tuesday. “Let’s hope it’s only tonight. I’m walking around, I might as well be playing ‘Marco Polo.’ I have no idea where I am.”
Costas later explained his decision to sit out in a statement released by NBC, saying “As a practical matter, I simply couldn’t do my job because my eyes had become so blurry, watery and sensitive to light. I’m hopeful the symptoms will improve in the next couple of days and I can return to the broadcast. Also, the last thing I want is to go through the rest of my life owing Matt Lauer a bunch of favors.”
We hope Bob makes a quick recovery and can return to the games better than ever, but many viewers can agree that his eye infection is just too distracting and impossible to watch on TV. So below, we dedicated five songs for Bob Costas red eyes.
