For the first time ever in Los Angeles, hockey moving outdoors for the anticipated NHL Stadium Series featuring the Los Angeles Kings vs. Anaheim Ducks in a regular-season game at Dodger Stadium.

Joining The K-EARTH 101 Morning Show today is hockey star and former King Luc Robitaille, who recently teamed up with “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky to welcome NHL’s portable refrigeration units to Dodger Stadium on Monday, to tell us how this outdoor game will work.

“This is how we pitched it to the league – for the last four or five years we reminded them that we played in 1991 in Las Vegas,” explained Luc. “At L.A. Live we built what we call Holiday Ice ever Christmas for about a month and a half we let people skate outdoor. So we kept telling the league ‘look, we have it done already. It works, it works!'”

Luc explains that the ice rink is kept cold by plastic pipes rolled on to a platform that are basically “freezing water going through” the pipes. Water is then poured on top of the frozen pipes and “slowly but surely” the water freezes in about two or three days to create the rink.

So what happens to the ice on a day like today when temperatures reach upwards of 80 degrees? Luc says that even with the unusually hot winter temps in L.A., at night the temperatures still go down to 50 degrees, which he say is perfect playing weather.

“We love it,” Luc laughed. “We’re not going to play during the day, so during the day if it’s sunny…we’re going to cover the ice with some kind of tarp, and as soon as it gets dark around 4:30 or so that’s when we’ll pull it off.”

The Stadium Series game also has a bunch of big time entertainment planned throughout the night. American Idol star Jordin Sparks will be singing the National Anthem, rock legends KISS are performing during the first intermission and the group Five For Fighting will play their hits during the second intermission.

“It’s definitely one of those events that people will want to see. It’s going to be absolutely incredible,” said Luc.
