Whether you call him Saint Nick, Kris Kringle or Dear Old Santa, he’s coming to town less than a week from tonight! And in 2013 Santa became sort of controversial because of a news commentary that was widely parodied, chuckled at, and debated. So what’s the reality about the man with all the toys?
Our modern vision of Santa originated in the 19th century when a famous story, “A Visit From St. Nicholas” by Clement Clarke Moore was published in 1823. Right after that the famous cartoonist Thomas Nast created some drawings of the man with the bag full of toys and that image has stayed with us in songs, movies, greeting cards and more all these years later.
Before that it was the Dutch who brought the tale of Sinterklaas and an image of him to America, but it wasn’t anywhere as popular as the modern image we have today. But here’s the cool part about Santa in America… he can look any way you want! Here’s what he looks like at my house:
