Thursday night was the big premiere of NBC’s live production of the beloved musical The Sound Of Music starring American Idol darling Carrie Underwood as Maria von Trapp and True Blood‘s Stephen Moyer as Captain Von Trapp.
Over 18 million viewers tuned in to watch the production, making it the number one show last night. Underwood no doubt had some big shoes to fill in the role made most famous by Julie Andrews in the 1965 film adaptation, and while her vocals shined during the musical’s classic songs, many were quick to point out that her acting fell flat.
The reviews rolling in of the live production have not been kind so far; People called Underwood a “miscast” and though The Hollywood Reporter pointed out five highlights of the show, they commented, “Carrie Underwood ably belts out the hits — but her acting leaves a hole where this live production’s heart should’ve been.”
On the other end of the spectrum, there was plenty of positive support for Underwood stepping into the challenging role with stars like Billy Bush tweeting “Bravo @carrieunderwood. This takes huge cajones!” and good friend Miranda Lambert cheering her on “Good luck tonight @carrieunderwood! Gonna curl up on the couch with my gal pals and watch you be amazing as always!”
