It was a surreal moment, standing right in front of a television legend whose career dates back to my childhood. The often entertaining, and always puzzling William Shatner has done it again. I attended his first of three concerts in Southern California promoting his new self conceived music album, appropriately titled “Ponder The Mystery.”
A packed house of all ages came to Sainte Rock in Hermosa Beach to witness Big Bill provide the narration while accompanied by a very tight and enthusiastic musical performance by former members of the artsy rock band Yes.
A founding member of Yes, Tony Kaye was at the keyboards, former Yes member Billy Sherwood on guitar and vocals. Shatner co-wrote the entire 15 song album with Sherwood.
The music was excellent, it was like attending a Yes concert that included the gravelly voiced Capt Kirk at the helm. This was the first of 5 scheduled live appearances for Shatner and “Circa” (the band).
The next show is tonight at The Canyon Club in Agoura Hills. Friday night they hit The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano (get your tickets here). January dates include Las Vegas, and West Virginia.
As we left the show, we had the chance to buy “Shatner In Space” t-shirts. I didn’t buy one, because I think that statement speaks for itself without any assistance from me.
It was an unusual, but thoroughly enjoyable evening. This was Shatner’s first concert to promote ‘Ponder the Mystery,’ but he is not new to concert performances. You will find many on YouTube, including one with Leonard Nimoy.
