This morning we had some very special in studio guests join The K-EARTH 101 Morning Show to talk about the empowering leadership expo just for girls called Girltopia hosted by The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles.
Girl Scout representative Joanna joined us in studio to give an overview of the event, plus one of the musical guests of Girltopia and winners of The Next Great Family Band, The Sledge Grits Band, performed live!
Girltopia is the largest expo just for girls and features 300+ activity booths, games, giveaways and an exclusive Teen Summit leadership conference for junior high and high school girls. There will also be a celebrity empowerment panel featuring Disney stars, celebrities and an entertainment main stage that will feature music and more.
One of the musical acts scheduled to perform includes our special in studio guests The Sledge Grits Band.
This LA-based superstar group is made up of the four Sledge sisters who love to rock with 18-year-old Keiko on guitar, 16-year-old Kariel on bass, 13-year-old Mimi as the lead singer and 11-year-old bo-Pah on drums.
They’ve been playing music together for about five or six years now, and have even been featured on the CBS Early Morning Show and opened up on the road for rapper Ludacris, though Mimi laughs they “weren’t allowed to listen to him yet.”
For those wondering, their name combines their last name with the acronym ‘GRITS’ meaning “girls raised in the sun” because they were originally born in Florida. Though they share the same last name of another famous ‘Sledge’ musical act, Sister Sledge, they don’t bear any relation to the group. However, Kariel tells us that Kathy Sledge is a “very close family friend.”
You can catch The Sledge Grits Band performing live at Girltopia on Nov. 9th, and you don’t have to be in Girl Scouts to join in all the fun, either. Girltopia is open to all girls and takes place Saturday, Nov. 9th at the Los Angeles Convention Center from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Registration for Girltopia 2013 ends Monday, Oct. 21st at 9 p.m. Visit www.girltopiala.org to sign up.
