As you may remember, back in 2010, Michael Douglas revealed that he was battling throat cancer. Well now it turns out that he wasn’t being completely honest about his diagnosis, and for the first time he’s revealing the truth as part of Male Cancer Awareness Week.
Douglas sat down with fellow actor Samuel L. Jackson on the British talk show This Morning on Friday, where he confessed he had tongue cancer, not throat cancer.
He explains why he lied, saying he was about to begin promoting his movie Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps when he got the news.
According to the New York Post, Douglas said that his doctor told him to lie about the diagnosis, recalling “The surgeon said, ‘Let’s just say it’s throat cancer.’ I said, ‘OK, you don’t want to say it’s tongue cancer?’ I said, ‘Why’s that?’ ”
He continued, “And he said, ‘Well, if you really want to know why, if we do have to have surgery, it’s not going to be pretty. You’ll lose part of your jaw and your tongue and all of that stuff.’ So I said, ‘OK, sure.’ ”
Luckily he never did need that tongue surgery and after aggressive radiation and chemotherapy, Douglas says he now has a clean bill of health and the prognosis for the future looks good.
