We’re having a party in the studio reliving the early days of MTV to kick off our ‘I Want My MTV’ Weekend with special guests Nina Blackwood and Susanna Hoffs of The Bangles!
Susanna talked to the K-EARTH 101 Morning Show about the making of the music video for the Bangles’ No. 1 hit “Walk Like An Egyptian,” which was nominated for an MTV VMA for Best Group Video in 1987.
“It was an amazing thing…we performed in New York City – there was a contest so we had a live audience – and there was a lot of hairspray and teasing of hair. I think that was almost the biggest my hair ever got. That is my memory,” she laughed.
All in all, the video only took two days to shoot; one day for the performance and a the other day to get shots of people on the street doing their best interpretive ‘Egyptian’ dance.
Susanna, joined by musician Matthew Sweet, also talked about their new project of ’80s covers entitled Under the Covers: Vol. 3 featuring their spin on hits like “Free Falling,” “They Don’t Know,” “Our Lips Are Sealed” and a bonus track featuring Prince’s “I Would Die For You.”
“Matthew and I are fans of music…that’s why we do it,” said Susanna on making the covers album. “We started out as fans and it’s a pleasure learning these songs.”
Susanna and Matthew’s Under The Covers Vol. 3 will be available on Nov. 12, with the first two releases in the Under the Covers series available now on www.susannahoffs.com.
Susanna also tells us that she will be performing at the big outdoor country music fest Stagecoach 2014 happening from April 25-27. For more information on the lineup and tickets, click here.
