Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr., two of the original members of the popular group The 5th Dimension, have not only shared a long musical history together, but also a true love story as husband and wife.

Having just celebrated their 44th anniversary, Marilyn and Billy remain musical partners as well as best friends to this day, and now the duo will be bringing their decades of hits to the stage for three nights this weekend at the Catalina Jazz Club.

Billy and Marilyn joined Gary Bryan from the K-EARTH 101 Morning Show to talk about their upcoming shows and the legendary songs the group was behind.

Fans of 5th Dimension can expect to hear all the big hits by the group including “Wedding Bell Blues,” “Up Up and Away,” “One Less Bell To Answer,” and of course the Grammy Award-winning single “Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In.”

The song was originally written for the 1967 musical Hair, but Billy and Marilyn told Gary about the moment they decided to record the song and release it as a single, which peaked at No.1 for six weeks.

Billy explains that the group was in New York City for a show and he lost his wallet in a cab while he was out shopping one day. He says the person who got in after found it and called him at the hotel he was staying at. Billy was so grateful that the man had returned his wallet, so he invited him out to the group’s show at the Royal Box.

Billy found out after the show that the man, named Ed Gifford, just so happened to be one of the producers of Hair and in turn, he invited the group out to see the musical.

“We had been trying to get tickets to see ‘Hair’ – we could not get in…because the show was so popular,” said Billy.

“We couldn’t even sit together because the tickets were so difficult to come by,” added Marilyn. “At the intermission after we had just heard Ronnie Dyson sing ‘Aquarius’ all five of us came together and said ‘oh my God, we have to record that song!'”

You have three chances to catch Marilyn and Billy singing all the timeless hits of the 5th Dimension and more this weekend Aug. 30-Sept. 1 at the Catalina Jazz Club. For tickets and show information, click here.
