A group of college students are being praised for their small act of honesty after wandering in a closed store in Wayne, New Jersey and paying for their items even when no clerk was around.

The students from William Paterson University entered Buddy’s Small Lots thinking the store was still open because the lights were on and the doors didn’t lock due to a malfunction in their alarm system the popped the locks back open, reports CBS New York.

The surveillance video shows the students clearly leaving cash (even digging for extra change to cover the tax) on the cashier counter for the items they picked up before leaving the store.

Their honest act was praised by the store’s director of operations Marci Lederman, who awarded the foursome with gift cards to the store.

“I think that there are still wonderful people in this world that have a sense of honor and dignity,” Lederman said. “They were coming in there to shop, they did just that, and they felt that it was the right thing to do to leave the money behind. They didn’t take advantage.”

These students prove honesty is always the best policy. Watch the full story in the video below!
