For the group’s first album in nearly a decade, singer Phillip Bailey said he recruited co-founding EWF member Larry Dunn to help produce the sound for Now Then & Forever.
“I said, ‘Let’s go back to the drawing board,’” he told Billboard. “It’s a great representation of who Earth, Wind and Fire is now, but not departing from the classic sound.”
“It doesn’t sound like we’re trying to be anyone other than Earth, Wind and Fire,” added bassist Verdine White.
In the group’s first single “My Promise,” loyal fans certainly won’t be disappointed. The new single features all the key ingredients of a classic EWF song; a dancey guitar riff, powerful horns, smooth vocals, and most importantly, plenty of funky bass driven by White.
