The legendary singer/songwriter Gary U.S. Bonds, known for his 1960s hits “New Orleans” and “Quarter To Three,”  is celebrating his 74th birthday and prolific music career with the launch of his brand new autobiography,”By U.S. Bonds, That’s My Story”!

Bonds joined Gary Bryan of the K-EARTH 101 Morning Show to talk a little about the amazing stories he’s lived out in his influential music career. Gary cleared up one of those stories in particular about a rumor that he had fired The Beatles as his opening band for a tour in Europe.

Bonds explains that back then, labels who choose the opening bands for international shows. The first group that opened for him were terrible, so he fired them, but the second group was even worse, so he rehired the first group – which he found out later just so happened to be The Beatles.

“I didn’t know who they were when I was there – they were the band,” laughed Bonds. “They were just guys that were there and we were so busy chasing women that we didn’t know who they were.”

Gary also shares the story of how Dick Clark helped launch his music career. After his demo track was rejected from several radio DJs, Bonds says he went to Clark to play him the track and the rest, is well, history.

“We played it for [Dick Clark] and he loved it,” recalled Bonds. “He said ‘you know, I’d like to put this on American Bandstand’ and of course we happily agreed. The next day he put it on, and wow from that, magic happened…Dick Clark was the magic man.”

These stories and more are all included in Gary U.S. Bonds’ new autobiography “By U.S. Bonds, That’s My Story.” The book, written with Stephen Cropper, includes a forward written by Steven Van Zandt and over 80 rare photos of Bonds with his famous friends including Muhammad Ali, Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Ben E.
