It’s the first mega-blockbuster of the summer and has already crushed opening weekend records overseas, but this weekend the anticipated opening of Iron Man 3 is set to take over the U.S.
This morning we were pleased to welcome friend of the Morning Show’s and one of the stars of the film, actor/musician Ashely Hamilton, who plays Jack Taggert a.k.a. “Firepower” in the film. You may recognize Ashely as the son of actor George Hamilton, but with his new role in Iron Man, he’s posed to breakout and make a bigger name for himself.
Ashley talked to us about how he got his big break with his role in Iron Man, and it was all thanks to the ‘Iron Man’ himself, Robert Downey Jr.
“Just think a year ago I was getting voted off with Macy Gray [on Dancing With the Stars],” laughed Ashley. “Robert Downey, who is a lovely man – literally he’s one of the nicest people I know in the business – he said, ‘there’s a lot of good roles, I can get you in there, but I can’t give you the job.’ I said just give me a shot and I will knock it out of the park.”
And knock it out he did. Ashley plays the character Taggert, or Firepower, that many diehard fans will recognize from the early comics of the superhero series.
“Jack Taggert – Firepower is also his name. He’s from the Marvel comics from I think 85-88, which is the extremist concept of it all, which is kind of how this movie is,” said Ashley.
Ashley also dishes on what it was like working with a star-studded cast on the film featuring Downey, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce and many more. But he explains over time, working with a big A-list cast of stars just turns into working with your good friends.
“I guess it’s like if you have steak every night, eventually it’s just kind of boring,” he said.
Even before the third film opens, the biggest question all fans want to know is, will there be a fourth installment of Iron Man? We asked Ashely his thoughts on the future of the franchise.
“I have no idea. Usually on all those series after three someone signs off and signs on, but I can’t see anybody else doing that role,” he said. “To turn comic books into reality and something that you buy in to human emotion and you go along on this ride, it’s amazing Marvel can do that and they do it so well.”
Iron Man 3 hits theaters tomorrow and is sure to set some new box office records here in the U.S. Listen to our full interview with Ashley about what it was like behind the scenes on set of Iron Man 3!
