File this under “bright idea of the day” – a man from the southern Indian state of Kerala was arrested on Monday after he handed over his keys to his hot red Ferrari to his 9-year-old son for a birthday joy ride.
The father, Mohammed Nisham, was arrested on charges of endangering the life of a child and allowing a minor to drive, reports New York Post, but was later released after posting bail of 5,000 rupees ($92).
The boy’s mother, Amal Nisham, took video of him driving the sports car around the streets with his 5-year-old brother sitting in the passenger seat. After the video quickly circulated the web and caused outrage around India, police filed charges on the father.
However, the parents don’t regret handing over the keys to their luxury car, and admitted that the boy has driven the family’s other luxury cars including a Bentley and Lamborghini since he was five.
“It was his ninth birthday, and since he was insisting for months, we allowed him to drive the Ferrari. He is a cautious and confident driver,” the mother told television channel NDTV. “It’s not easy for a child to achieve such a feat at this young age.”
