This afternoon listen for Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” on ‘Tickets @ 2.’

King recorded it shortly after leaving The Drifters in 1960. It established him as a solo artist. The song was based on a 1955 Gospel song of the same name by The Staple Singers. Ben E. King wanted The Drifters to record it, but the groups manager rejected it.

After leaving The Drifters, King brought it to the legendary songwriting team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who gave it a more contemporary sound and polished it into a hit.

Rob Reiner got the idea to use “Stand By Me” as the title and incorporate it into the movie after he heard the song one day on the radio.

We’ll take caller # 8 when we play it between two and three to win a pair of tickets to see “Flashdance-The Musical” coming to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts May 7th through the 19th. Call 1-800-232-KRTH (5784) – Good Luck!
