With a career as one of music’s busiest and talented producers, Lou Adler has worked with a laundry list of artists over his five-decade career including Jan and Dean, Mamas and the Papas, Carole King, Cheech and Chong, Spirit, Grassroots and many others.
Having such a notable career, many assume that Lou has already been recognized by music’s seminal Hall of Fame museum, but Lou is actually just now up for induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year.
“It feels pretty good,” he tells Gary & Lisa about being part of this year’s induction class. “It gives me an answer to that question ‘when are you in the Hall of Fame – why aren’t you in the Hall of Fame?'”
Because of his long history and work with the comedy duo Cheech and Chong, Lou says that the comedians are on tap to say a few words about his career at the induction ceremony.
“Be careful what you wish for, Cheech and Chong are going to induct me,” he laughed. “I hear Carole King will perform for me.”
Along with Lou being inducted into The Hall of Fame this year, another notable music producer will be inducted as well. Lou talks about being included along with the great Quincy Jones at this year’s ceremony.
“I’m thrilled that it happened, but Quincy should have been in the first time around,” said Lou. “It’s amazing that he’s not but I’m thrilled that it’s with me.”
In addition to becoming a Hall of Famer, Lou is currently working on a “family reunion” project of sorts with none other than Cheech and Chong that’s coming to a theater near you.
“The Chambers Brothers came to me and said why don’t we take the tracks from all the early albums and animate them. I talked to Tommy Chong and he said ‘perfect, I make a movie and I don’t have to leave my house,'” laughed Lou.
Aptly titled Cheech And Chong’s Animated Movie, this film will feature some of the duo’s classic comedy bits along with the memorable music from their Grammy-winning albums. The movie will hit theaters on April 18th and be released on DVD and Blu-Ray on April 23rd.
The 28th Annual Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place Thursday, April 18, 2013 at the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles, and it will air on HBO on Saturday May 18 at 9 pm ET. Click here to see the full list of this year’s inductees.
