Did You Know: “Tears Of A Clown” By Smokey Robinson & the Miracles

Today our ‘Tickets @ 2′ feature song is “Tears Of A Clown” by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles.

Smokey based the song on the Italian opera Pagliacci, which is about a clown who must make the audience laugh while he weeps behind his makeup because his wife betrayed him.

Stevie Wonder came up with the music for this song with a top Motown producer named Hank Cosby. Robinson listened to the music for a few days and decided it should sound like a circus, and came up with the lyrics based on a clown.

This was the only #1 hit for Smokey & The Miracles.

When we play it between two and three we’ll take caller #8 at 1-800-232-KRTH (5784) to win ’em before you can buy ’em, a pair of tickets to see Ray Manzarek and Robbie Krieger of the Doors this summer at the Pacific Amphitheatre.
