The new crop of celebrities has just been announced for the season 16 of Dancing With The Stars, and this morning we welcomed one of the contestants, boxing champ Victor “Vicious” Ortiz, live in studio!

Victor will be trading in his boxing gloves for dancing shoes this season and says that he decided to join the cast of DWTS because he has time off to nurse a broken jaw.

“They’ve been approaching us for a while, but I was in training camp,” he explained, adding that since he has a broken jaw, “I definitely approached [DWTS] and I chased it a hundred miles an hour and thank goodness we got casted.”

As a boxer, Victor might be light on his feet, but he’s definitely hard on the hits, being named one of the hardest hitting boxers of the last 30 years. He says he’ll be bringing that competitiveness and hard edge to the dance floor.

“I’m definitely not as nice outside the ring as I’m portrayed to be,” he laughs.

He also debunks one common assumption people have that boxers can translate their light footwork easily to the dance floor, which Victor says is “not accurate at all.”

“Obviously it gives you some ups in the sense of your mobility of the feet, I can learn things very quick with my feet,” he explains. “The feet isn’t all that matters, at this point in time Lindsay’s got me trying loosen up my shoulders – I’m so used to being in a boxer’s pose.”

With just a few weeks away from the two-hour Dancing premiere on March 18th, Victor is already in rehearsals with his partner Lindsay Arnold, and is already feeling the burn.

“I’ve done two rehearsals with Lindsay, and she doesn’t ease up on me, which is good,” he says.

Though he’s use to being in front of millions of viewers in the ring, Victor said he was nervous about the DWTS announcement this week.

“This is nothing like being in front of millions of people for what I do,” he said. “It was completely different, just the announcement alone yesterday, I got so jittery, I was very nervous, Lindsay was trying to tell me to calm down a couple times, my heart was beating a hundred miles an hour.”

Despite having some pre-show jitters, Victor is confident going into this season of Dancing and is sizing up his competition with fellow celeb contenders. He says he thinks his biggest competition on the show will be Olympic gymnast Aly Raisman.
