For the first time since the bizarre girlfriend hoax unraveled and publicly humiliated Notre Dame star Manti Te’o, the mastermind behind the whole scheme is speaking out in an exclusive interview with Dr. Phil.
In a two-part special of the Dr. Phil Show, the host talks with Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the man suspected to be behind the voice and alter ego of Lennay Kekua who was involved in an online relationship with Te’o.
Dr. Phil appeared on the Today Show this morning to talk about details of the interview, saying after speaking with Tuiasosopo he believe Te’o was “absolutely, unequivocally” not involved in the hoax.
“Here we have a young man that fell deeply, romantically in love,’’ McGraw told NBC’s Mike Taibbi in a segment that aired on TODAY Wednesday. “I asked him straight up, ‘Was this a romantic relationship with you?’ And he says yes. I said, ‘Are you then therefore gay?’ And he said, ‘When you put it that way, yes.’ And then he caught himself and said, ‘I am confused.’’’
So what made Tuiasosopo finally put an end to the alter ego and come forward after the hoax was uncovered? He explains to Dr. Phil in the interview:
“I wanted to end it because after everything I had gone through, I finally realized that I just had to move on with my life. I had to start just living and let this go. There were many times where Manti and Lennay had broken up, but something would bring them back together whether it was something going on in his life or in Lennay’s life, or in this case, my life.’’
The two-day special airs this Thursday and Friday at 3 pm on CBS, but you can hear a sneak preview of the interview below.
