After the scandal broke that Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o's online girlfriend was non-existent, many questions about the hoax still remain unanswered, but a new interview with Manti himself might clear up some of the confusion.
ABC’s Katie Couric scored the exclusive sit-down interview with Manti that will air Thursday, but several clips and reports from the interview are coming in.
In the interview, Manti admits to Katie that he briefly lied to the media and the public after he found out that the girl he’d been involved with online did not exist. ABC News reports that Manti insists that he had not been lying up until Dec. 6, but that he was duped by the online scam that had him believing his girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, died of cancer.
“You stuck to the script. And you knew that something was amiss, Manti,” Couric said, in which Manti replied “correct.”
Manti added, “Katie, put yourself in my situation. I, my whole world told me that she died on Sept. 12. Everybody knew that. This girl, who I committed myself to, died on Sept. 12.”
Manti, 21, found out that the girl he thought had died didn’t even exist when he got a call from a girl using the same number after she supposedly died.
“Now I get a phone call on Dec. 6, saying that she’s alive and then I’m going be put on national TV two days later. And to ask me about the same question. You know, what would you do?” Te’o said
You can catch the whole interview with Manti on Katie Thursday at 3 p.m. on ABC. Listen to some of the clips from the interview below.
