Famous Sibling Rivalries In Sports
Super Bowl XLVII has been set with San Francisco and Baltimore going head to head for the NFL championship title, and for the first time in the game’s history, the two head coaches in the big game are brothers!
Now dubbed the “Harbaugh Bowl,” 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and Ravens coach John Harbaugh will compete for their team’s victory in a historic sibling rivalry on Feb. 3 in New Orleans.
With the Super Bowl sibling showdown, it got us thinking about some of the other great sibling rivalries in sports that takes their family competitiveness to the professional level! Check out some of the most memorable sibling rivalries in sports below!
The Manning Brothers
Superstar quarterback brothers Peyton and Eli Manning have both had incredible NFL careers and won three Super Bowl rings between them. However, younger brother Eli has the edge over his big bro with two Super Bowl titles in 2008 and 2012.
The Williams Sisters
Tennis pros Serena and Venus Williams have both been ranked No.1 in the league, but younger sister Serena has the edge with 13 Grand Slam titles over Venus’ seven. Despite their rivalry in the singles matches, the sisters have combined their power on the court to win three Olympic medals and 13 Grand Slam titles in doubles.
The DiMaggio Trio
Brothers Joe, Vince and Dom DiMaggio made baseball history as center fielders for different teams. Joe famously played for the New York Yankees for 13 years, Dom was a seven-time all star with the Boston Red Sox and Vince was a two-time all star outfielder.
The Gasol Brothers
Basketball bros Pau and Marc Gasol both play professionally in the NBA, but only older brother Pau can show off his two championship rings with the Lakers while Marc still vies for his own with the Grizzlies.
The Staal Foursome
The four Staal brothers, Eric, Marc, Jordan and Jared, all play professional hockey with different teams. Oldest brother Eric was first round pick with the Carolina Hurricanes and led them to Stanley Cup victory in 2006 as the team captain. Marc was also first round pick and plays with the New York Rangers; Jordan was a first round pick with Pittsburgh Penguins and won a Stanley Cup title in 2009; and Jared now plays with his brother Eric for the Hurricanes.
