The strange tale of Notre Dame’s star linebacker and Heisman Trophy frontrunner, Manti Te’o's made-up dead girlfriend keeps getting stranger as more details begin to unravel.
If you’ve been following the story, you know that journalists from Deadspin.com broke the story that Te’o's supposed girlfriend who died of cancer, Lennay Kekua, never actually existed. Te’o insists that he had been deceived all along and had no idea that someone was portraying the made-up girl in an online scam commonly known as “catfishing.”
But there are several loose ends and questions in the story that makes many believe that Te’o had been in on the hoax from the start and made up the tragic story of a girl whom he fell in love with having never met her and tragically died from Leukemia. Some think he made up the story in order to gain sympathy and media attention to help his odds winning the Heisman trophy.
Still, many of us are left scratching our heads trying to follow this bizarre story, that if it turns out he was deceived, makes us feel sorry that he had been the target of a cruel joke.
So what do you believe… was Te’o telling the truth that he didn’t know his girlfriend didn’t really exist, or was he in on the hoax from the start?
