Californians were saddened Monday upon hearing the news that KCET icon Huell Howser had passed away from natural causes at the age of 67 in his home Sunday night.

The news struck a chord with the many fans who watched Huell introduce them to some of California’s unique treasures and people of all kinds on his PBS travel show California’s Gold.

Huell delighted fans each episode with his folksy demeanor and good-nature personality that was as much a part of his character off camera as it was on the show. His legacy and impact was felt well beyond the boundaries of California; Simpsons creator Matt Groening was such a big fan, he modeled a reporter type charter after Huell in two episodes of the animated show.

Many K-EARTH 101 listeners have had the pleasure of meeting Huell in person over the years, and shared their fond memories of this California icon with us on air this morning.

Listen below to some of the calls we took from K-EARTH 101 listeners who have met, worked or just wanted to share memories of Huell in honor of his legacy.

We found a compilation of some of the moments of Huell on California’s Gold on YouTube. Watch and be amazed along with Huell one more time at some of California’s wonders.
