Last night (December 6), New Jersey Governor Chris Christie stopped by The Daily Show and got right down to the real issues with host Jon Stewart – fan-girling over Bruce Springsteen. There was plenty of time for serious discussions about politics and Hurricane Sandy relief between the two Jersey boys, but they both agreed that hugs from Springsteen are downright magical.

In his appearance, Christie dreamily describes his experience of meeting Springsteen, for whom the Governor has pledged his undying fandom time and time again. Christie claims he’s attended hundreds of Springsteen shows and even sang “Thunder Road” on Fallon back in September. An Atlantic piece earlier this year went as far to say that Christie “would marry [Springsteen] if he were gay and if gay people were allowed to marry in the state he governs.” In that same piece, Christie discusses being “not a priority of his [Bruce's] right now.” Clearly, he has dedicated a bit of thought to The Boss.

Springsteen, however, hasn’t been so quick to jump into a bromance with Christie, whose tax policies Bruce blasted in a letter to hometown paper Asbury Park Press in 2011. So Christie really had to work for this one.

After the recent Hurricane Sandy benefit concert, which was televised on November 2, Springsteen approached Christie backstage while he was chatting up E Street Band members Steven Van Zandt and Max Weinberg. Christie describes his subsequent hug with The Boss as a “slow dance.”

“Then he said the most amazing thing to me,” Christie tells Stewart, like a kid on Christmas morning. “He said, ‘It’s official – we’re friends!’ But you know what it’s like, Jon. I’m looking for a little more now.” Ah yes. Governor Christie, looking for the illusive BFF title from Springsteen.

In more serious matters, Christie discussed at length the devastation brought by Hurricane Sandy, as well as his praise for President Obama (confirmed Springsteen pal, BTW) in the wake of the storm. Watch the exhaustive interview in three parts here (this includes Springsteen talk), here and here.
