Today’s ‘Tickets @ 2′ hit is “Unchained Melody” by The Righteous Brothers.

The song first appeared in the 1955 movie Unchained, starring former L.A. Rams football player Elroy “Crazy Legs” Hirsch. It was a prison movie.

Alex North wrote the music, Hy Zaret wrote the lyrics, and a singer named Todd Duncan sang the movie version. When the film was released, an orchestral version by Les Baxter was released along with a version by Al Hibbler. Baxter’s hit #1, and Hibbler’s went to # 3.

The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit in 1965, it was released as the B-side of a song written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin titled “Hung On You.” DJ’s flipped it preferring “Unchained Melody.” Bobby Hatfield sang lead. He had the higher voice over Bill Medley. In 2002 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63.

When we play it between two and three we’ll take caller #10 at 1-800-232-KRTH (5784) to win a pair of tickets to see Aerosmith with special guest Cheap Trick December 3rd at Staples Center.
