This morning, the Morning Show welcomed special guest, actor, activist and former Dancing With The Stars champ, J.R. Martinez to talk about his new book, Full Of Heart: My Story of Survival, Strength and Spirit.
Having just been in New York City during the time of Super Storm Sandy, J.R. tells us about his experience being right in the path of the storm. While many are still living without power and water, J.R. explains that he and his family were one of the lucky ones to come out safe from the disaster.
“It was a scary time, but we’re blessed,” said J.R.
J.R. was in New York during the hurricane because he was running in the New York Marathon for charity. He tells us what it was like finding out that it was ultimately canceled due to the storm.
“I’m all about positivity,” said JR. “When they said the marathon was going to continue on, I just looked at it and said you know what, maybe this can be a positive for the community…for people in general just to kind of pick it back up and continue on.”
For J.R., living through this natural disaster just adds to the craziness of his unpredictable life story. In his book Full Of Heart, J.R. tells his unbelievable timeline of events from his childhood to surviving a terrifying explosion while on duty in Iraq. He hopes his tale of survival will help others through similar tragic events, like the hurricane.
“I hope that’s what people can take away from my story,” said JR. “My life has bee unpredictable. There’s been unexpected tragedy change that’s happened in my life.”
His book touches on all those unexpected tragedies and how he powered through the “big explosion” in his life to become a source of inspiration and positivity to others.
J.R. will be making a special appearance for a book signing at Vroman’s in Pasadena next Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. To learn more about his book, weathering out Super Storm Sandy and more, listen to our full interview with J.R. below.
