Since Superstorm Sandy first battered the east coast this week, the aftermath of flooding, high winds and fire breakouts has caused an estimated $20 billion in damage and has killed at least 55 people.

As many try to resume their normal lives after the storm, millions are still without power and it could be days until electricity is restored to Sandy-hit areas.

“We will get through the days ahead by doing what we always do in tough times — by standing together, shoulder to shoulder, ready to help a neighbor, comfort a stranger and get the city we love back on its feet,” New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

If you would like to help out victims of Superstorm Sandy, the Red Cross is accepting donations through various means:

  • Online:  www.redcross.org
  • Phone: 800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767); for Spanish speakers, 800-257-7575; for TDD,  800-220-4095.
  • Text: Text “Redcross” to 90999. You’ll receive a reply, asking you to confirm by texting “yes.”
  • Checks via mail to:  Superstorm Sandy Relief, P.O. Box 5967, Glendale, CA 91221

All checks should be made out to the American Red Cross and remember to write “Sandy Relief” on the check.
