A Freddie Mercury biopic has been in the works for several years – a film that is assuredly still on track, according to Queen guitarist Brian May.

May wrote a quick update about the film on his website, stating that it is on track for release in early 2014. “Filming is now scheduled to start in the spring,” May writes, adding that it’s “a slightly later schedule.” The film was originally slated to begin production in 2012.

He confirms that Borat star, British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, is still set to portray the Queen frontman. Cohen has been attached to the film since 2010, as has Oscar-nominated screenwriter Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Queen, upcoming Bond film Skyfall). In 2010, Morgan said he wasn’t interested in writing “an AIDS movie.” Instead, he’ll focus on Mercury and Queen’s history, and his struggles within the band in the year leading up to his 1991 death.

May, fellow founding Queen member Roger Taylor, and their longtime manager Jim Beach met to discuss the “pretty complex” “contractual things” and “determining who is responsible for what” regarding the film. However, May did tease other developments for Queen: “We did make some other plans, but they will have to stay under wraps for now.”

“Being in Queen is – bizarrely – as full of surprising twists and turns as ever – 40 years since we first got together, and 20 years after losing Freddie. But of course, Freddie is in so many ways very much alive. He must be wryly smiling somewhere!!!
