Randy Bachman started writing the song when he was waiting in the living room at the house of his girlfriend Denise, about to go out on a date. She was taking a long time getting ready so Bachman sat at the piano and wrote the beginning of the hit. Denise the girl he was waiting for – he married.

Burton Cummings who sings the lead said the song took 15 minutes to write once they sat down and put words to it. It got The Guess Who a record deal with RCA Records.
