With the long Labor Day weekend coming up, you might be thinking about taking a short trip out of town for a relaxing getaway. Instead of booking a room in a traditional hotel, why not mix things up a bit by staying at a resort with a little more adventure?

We found a few nearby hotels that are not only within a day trip from Los Angeles, but offer up plenty more than just a simple room and bed. Love the outdoors? Try sleeping in a yurt or a teepee to help in touch with nature. In the mood for some nostalgia? Travel back in time to the Romans or the good ol’ days of the ’50s with these five quirky hotel ideas!

Tree Bones, Big Sur

Head up the coast for breathtaking views and get out into the wilderness to recharge your batteries. Sleep inside a real yurt under the stars and forget about the big city life for the weekend.

The Vick, Los Almos

Looking for a little variety in the bland room options most hotels offer? The Vick near Santa Maria is a Victoria-style hotel that offers six-different themes to choose from; 1950s Cadillac, an Egyptian room (complete with a chariot), Pirate, French, Roman rooms, and a special Gypsy-themed room.

Vision Quest Ranch, Salinas

Have you ever wanted to go on African Safari, but can’t make the trip? In just a short road trip up to Salinas, CA, you can go on a wild safari adventure at the Vision Quest Ranch, complete with real lions, giraffes, monkeys, elephants and dozens more wild animals on the premises! The part that sold us? Elephants deliver breakfast to your bungalow each morning.

Palm Springs Rendezvous, Palm Springs

Everything was so simple in the ’50s, so travel back in time to this ’50s-style bed and breakfast in just a quick jaunt to Palm Springs. The different theme rooms will remind you of the days of poodle skits, start of rock and roll and the Rat Pack singers. Choose rooms from Pretty In Pink, Crooners, Stagecoach, Route 66, and Shake, Rattle & Roll.

Wigwam Hotel, Rialto

Originally built along the historic Route 66, the Wigwam Motel in San Bernadino makes dreams of sleeping inside a real teepee come to life. The grounds has nineteen 30-foot tall teepees for a fun camping experience unlike anything else!
