Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks have been spending time lately with their respective projects — Haynes with his solo group and his band Gov’t Mule; Trucks with the collective he leads with his wife, Susan Tedeschi, The Tedeschi Trucks Band. But this weekend, they’ll get back together as one of the most formidable guitar teams when The Allman Brothers Band hit the road again.
Haynes joined The Allman Brothers Band in 1989 for a reunion tour, which led to a full-on return to active duty. Prior to that, he’d played with Dickey Betts of The Allmans in The Dickey Betts Band, so they had an established partnership. Haynes quit the band in 1997 to concentrate full time on Gov’t Mule. After his first replacement Jack Pearson didn’t stick, Derek Trucks – nephew of drummer Butch Trucks — got the gig in 1999 and has been with the band ever since.
In 2000, The Allmans fired Betts, and Haynes rejoined, replacing his former boss. At that point, he and Trucks had to establish their relationship – as two lead guitarists who specialize in slide playing. Haynes explained the dynamic when he sat down with CBS Local for a video interview.
Last year, Warren and Derek’s bands were nominated against each other for the Best Blues Album Grammy: The Tedeschi Trucks Band’s Revelator took home the prize over Haynes’ Man In Motion (and Gregg Allman’s Low Country Blues). This year, the Tedeschi Trucks Band has a new live album, Everybody’s Talkin’, and Haynes has Live At The Moody Theater. Meanwhile, The Allman Brothers Band starts a string of dates with Santana starting July 22, in Darien Lake, New York.
