Did you catch the Major League All Star Game Tuesday night? Sure, the National League bested the American League 8-0 in Kansas City, but that wasn’t the big story everyone was talking about around the water cooler Wednesday morning.

Before the game started, country singer Luke Bryan raised some eyebrows during his performance of the National Anthem. Bryan could be seen on camera referencing his hand for the “Star Spangled Banner” lyrics as well as checking his watch while singing.

Many were quick to call out Byran’s performance as disrespectful, but the singer spoke out to clear things up a bit.

Wednesday morning, Byran responded to all the criticism by tweeting an apology:

“Morning everyone. I really wanna explain the national anthem performance from last night. I had a few keys words written down to insure myself that I wouldn’t mess up. I just wanted to do my best. I promise it was from the heart. If I offended anyone with my approach I sincerely apologize. Anytime I sing the anthem it is an honor and my heart beats out of my chest.”

Watch his National Anthem performance below and tell us, do you think he was disrespectful by sneaking a peek at the lyrics on his hand or did he have good intentions by making sure he didn’t mess up the song?
