Over the Independence Day weekend some friends and I drove up to the Sequoia National Forest to go camping and white water rafting. It was my first time, so during the days before we left all I could think about were those old horror movies with bears, serial killers and monsters in the lake. You know the ones…
Thankfully, I wasn’t anything like that!
The campsite was beautiful, and just across from a lovely lake. We took advantage of that lake in July almost immediately and just happened to have some portable refreshments with us, so it was all good.
After swimming and sunning we made one of the best dinners ever, with sausages, beans (and Blazing Saddles jokes), grilled veggies, fresh guacamole, salad, Spanish rice, potato salad, chips, wine and beer, grown up s’mores, and we even had a delicious pineapple upside down cake! Who knew a campfire and portable grill could cook so much, so perfectly?
During the “ghost stories” part of the evening and while playing a board game around the fire, the word “deliverance” came up twice. Uh-oh! Do you remember that movie? It stars Burt Reynolds on a rafting trip gone horribly wrong. Yikes!
The next morning our trip down the river was everything we imagined–and more! And I’m not just talking about the all the adrenaline pumping rapids we shot through on that little raft. Long story short… it was VERY eventful, twice, but we all made it through safe and sound and happy that we’d had such a fun time on the lower Kern River.
The weather was perfect, sleeping under the stars was beautiful, and everyone was so much fun. Good vibes all around, and I can hardly wait to go camping again in the most beautiful place on earth… Southern California.
